In May 2020 China announced a yearly defense budget of RMB 1268 trillion 1786 billion 1 marking a 66 percent 2 increase from the 2019 budget of RMB 1189 trillion 1723 billion. This is Chinas largest defense budget raise in three years.

Since the DoD has historically always estimated actual Chinese spending to be much higher than the budget the decreasing gap is a further sign that a growing share of Chinas spending on military activities is now in the official national defense budgetIf SIPRI is accurate with its 2019 estimates then military spending as a share of Chinas. The budget was announced to be 111 trillion yuan 175 billion which represents an 81 increase. Such expenditures include military and civil personnel including retirement pensions of military personnel and social services for personnel.
